Kenya Power now gives you the power to control your electricity consumption with prepaid KPLC tokens. With a KPLC prepaid meter, paper bills, disconnections and the hassles of reconnections are things you’ll never have to deal with. You can now buy a Kenya Power token from any authorised vendor or through your mobile phone.

How to buy KPLC Prepaid tokens though your mobile phone

Buying KPLC token via MPESA or Airtel Money is as simple as using your phone. You will receive a return SMS that contains the token number which you enter into the KPLC prepaid meter. When the electricity credit is used, you can purchase more credit.

How to buy KPLC token via Mpesa

Step 1
Go to MPESA menu select “pay bill”

Enter the Kenya Power prepaid business number 888880 and press OK

Enter the 11 digit pre-payment meter number that you would like to purchase a token for and press OK

TAXES & LEVIES

The customer shall pay any taxes, levies or duties imposed from time to time by the Government. At present, the following are levied by the Government:

1. VAT* at 12% charged to:
   a) Fixed Charge
   b) Demand Charge (not applicable to domestic customers)
   c) Foreign Exchange Fluctuation Adjustment
   d) Fuel Cost and;
   e) Inflation Adjustment
   f) Taxable value of electrical energy consumed in a manner required by the Government.
2. Rural Electrification Programme (REP) levy at 5% of revenue from Unit sales.
3. Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) levy at 3 Kenya cents/kWh

Fifth Schedule of Value Added Tax Act Cap 476 exempts VAT on supply of electrical energy to a domestic household where the consumption does not exceed two hundred kilowatt-hours (units).

KPLC Tokens – What you should know about VAT!

As per the Fifth Schedule of the Value Added Tax Act Cap 476: “VAT shall be exempt in the supply of electrical energy to a domestic household
where the consumption does not exceed two hundred kilowatt-hours (200kWh).”

KPLC Tokens – What happens when you exceed 200 units in a month?

VAT charges shall be levied on all the electrical energy (units) bought from the beginning of the month.

KPLC Tokens – What you should know about Tariff DC

1. Tariff DC is a step tariff and two tokens of the same amount may not give you the same number of units depending on the step you are in amongst other factors.
2. Kenya Power’s vending system is online; hence the system keeps a record of all previous purchases and is thus able to determine the appropriate step in the tariff calculation.

Questions about KPLC Prepaid Tokens

How can I get a Kenya power prepaid meter?

At the moment Kenya Power has pre selected the project sites to be converted from the traditional meter to prepayment. There are plans to roll out countrywide.

Who will meet the cost of the KPLC prepaid meters?

Kenya Power will meet the cost of pre-payment meter installation for the project phase.

Is KPLC prepaid tokens cheaper that what I pay now?

No the charges will be the same. The only difference is that with prepayment, you will be paying in advance.

Will my electricity be shut when the KPLC token credit runs out?

Yes, your electricity will be shut off (disconnected) when your credit runs out. However, the meter will give a warning when the credit falls below
20Kwhrs. When faced with this situation it is advisable to top up your credit so as to avoid disconnection.

How do I buy KPLC token? (KPLC token agents)

You may obtain credit from existing Kenya Power pay points e.g. Electricity House and Stima Plaza, plus other 3rd party vendors such as Uchumi, Airtel Money and Safaricom (M-Pesa) so as to improve purchase convenience to the customer.

If I have an overdue bill, will my electricity be shut off when the technicians come to read my KPLC meter?

No, your electricity will not be shut off; however, you should endeavour to clear the debt prior to conversion, otherwise the bill will be transferred to the prepayment system. If the transfer occurs, on subsequent purchase of electricity, a portion of your payment will be deducted
and used to reduce the arrears.

Once the KPLC prepaid meter is installed, will the Kenya Power technicians still come to read my meter?

No, meter reading is not necessary in prepayment metering system. However, our Kenya Power technicians will be visiting customer premises from time to time to carryout inspections as required by law.

How will the Kenya Power technicians be identified?

The Kenya Power technician coming to change the meter from the credit one to the pre-paid wil have a company identification card.

What happens to my current electricity deposit?

Your current electricity deposit will be refunded if you have no debt.

How much power can I buy?

You can buy as much power as you wish.

Does the KPLC prepaid meters come with no units upon installation?

The prepaid meter comes with preloaded 30units that will be recovered on subsequent token purchase

Where to buy KPLC prepaid tokens

Purchasing a token
1. Go to the local electricity vendor.
2. Supply the operator at the vendor with the meter ID card or meter serial number.
3. Supply the operator with the amount you wish to purchase.
4. You will receive a 20-digit token printed on a receipt.

Note: KPLC prepaid meter number

To display the meter serial number, key in ‘100’ followed by the ‘Enter’ key. The meter will display the 11-digit meter serial number, scrolling from right to left (twice).

This number is the same as the meter serial number and the number on the User ID card used to purchase electricity

Being the only company of its kind in Kenya, we take the job of bringing power to the people seriously.
We are in the business of power supply and hence its distribution to homes and business to ensure smooth running of day-to-day activities. Kenya Power is responsible for ensuring that there is adequate line capacity to maintain supply and quality of electricity across the country. The interconnected network of transmission and distribution lines cover about 49,818 kilometers.

Through continuous efforts by Kenya Power and all its stakeholders, Kenya is on the international map as one of the countries with the best annual connectivity rate in Africa.

In Kenya, electricity is mainly generated from Hydro, Thermal and Geothermal sources – with wind generation accounting for less than 6 Megawatts of the installed capacity. Currently, hydropower comprises over 40 percent of the installed capacity in Kenya and is sourced from various stations managed by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).

National grid
The national grid is operated as an integral network linked by a 220 kV and 132 kV transmission network. There is a limited length of 66 kV transmission lines. The national grid impacts on the future growth of the energy sector because any new generation capacity must take into consideration the existing network and its capacity to handle new loads.

Expansion
Kenya Power reinforces the power transmission and distribution network by constructing additional lines and substations.

Efficiency
Efficiency of the transmission and distribution network continues to be enhanced in both technical and non-technical aspects. (See our annual report for more information on transmission system plans.) Technical improvements include re-conducting of lines, installation of capacitors, and construction of additional feeders and substations. Non-technical improvements include introduction of electronic meters, improvement of meter reading accuracy, fraud control and resolution of billing anomalies.

Supply and demand of electricity
Kenya Power currently has more than 2.6 million customers. Total electricity consumption in the 2012/2013 financial year was 8,087 gigawatt hours. The maximum daily electricity peak demand recorded in the last financial year (2012/2013) was 1,353 MW.

Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) manages and develops all public power electricity generating facilities. It sells electricity in bulk to Kenya Power.

Kenya Renewable Energy Portal The purpose of the portal is to provide easy access to relevant information about administrative entry requirements and procedures for operating a power plant based on renewable energy, the legal and regulatory framework for such investments (e.g., tariff regulation) and relevant market information.

Independent Power Producers (IPPs) build, own and operate power stations and sell the power in bulk to Kenya Power.

Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) reviews electricity tariffs and enforces safety and environmental regulations in the power sector as well as safeguarding the interests of electricity consumers.

Ministry of Energy formulates policy on the energy sector, in addition to administering the Rural Electrification Scheme.
Rural Electricity Authority (REA) implements rural electrification projects on behalf of the government.

Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) is mandated to construct new transmission lines with government funding to accelerate infrastructure development.

Geothermal Development Company (GDC) is tasked with developing steam fields to reduce upstream power development risks so as to promote rapid development of geothermal electric power.

Kenya Nuclear Electricity Board (KNEB): Established in 2010, the board is tasked with driving the nuclear energy generation programme for Kenya. This will be achieved through development of a road map for the realisation of the requirements and guidelines by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

KPLC – Kenya Power: History and Milestones

1875: Seyyied Bargash, the Sultan of Zanzibar, acquires a generator to light his palace and nearby streets.

1908: Harrali Esmailjee Jeevanjee, a wealthy merchant in Mombasa, acquires the generator and transfers it to the Mombasa Electric Power and Lighting Company.

1908: Around the same time, an engineer, Mr Clement Hertzel, is granted the exclusive right to supply electricity to the then district and town of Nairobi. This leads to the formation of the Nairobi Power and Lighting Syndicate.

1922: The two utilities in Nairobi and Mombasa are merged under a new company incorporated as the East African Power and Lighting Company (EAP&L).

1932: EAP&L acquires a controlling interest in the Tanganyika Electricity Supply Company Limited (TANESCO).

1936: EAP&L obtains generating and distribution licenses for Uganda, thereby entrenching its presence in the East African region.

1948: The Uganda Electricity Board (UEB) is established by the Ugandan Government to take over distribution of electricity in the country.

1954: The Kenya Power Company (KPC) is created – to be managed by EAP&L – for the purpose of transmitting power from Uganda through the Tororo-Juja line.

1964: EAP&L sells its majority stockholding in TANESCO to the Government of Tanzania.

1983: With its operations confined only to Kenya, EAP&L is renamed The Kenya Power and Lighting Company Limited (KPLC).

1997: The functions of generation are split from transmission and distribution. The Kenya Power Company, which has been under the management of KPLC since 1954, becomes a separate entity responsible for public-funded power generation projects.

1998: The Kenya Power Company is re-launched as the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).

2004: The Energy Sector Recovery Project (ESRP) is started to rehabilitate and reinforce the transmission and distribution network in order to improve the quality and reliability of supply, reduce system losses and increase access to electricity.

2007: Rural Electrification Authority (REA) is established to speed up the implementation pace of the rural electrification programme.

2008: Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO) is incorporated by the government to accelerate transmission infrastructure development.

Arrest

After winning the race for the ODM ticket in the party primaries, he was arrested in Florence Hotel in Migori Town with ballot papers.

The aspirant, together with returning officer Martin Rege who presided over the Awendo ODM nominations, were caught tearing Governor Obado’s ballot papers for the Awendo Town Hall polling centre.

The two, alongside an unidentified man, were taken to Migori Police Station to assist in investigations.

Swarup Mishra Biography

Swarup Mishra was born in Odiasha, Eastern India. He is the owner of Mediheal chain of Hospitals. He is an aspiring member of parliament for Kesses Constituency in Uasin Gichu county. He is a member of Jubilee party.
